I have a 1 GB Sandisk Mini Cruzer Flash drive I use to bring work files home with me to work on. Both my home computer and work computer use XP Pro. It's really not a big problem but rather an annoyance.

At home my rig has both USB1 and USB2 ports, at work it's strictly USB1. At home I can plug it into any port (USB1 or 2) and is recognized immediately and files are available. Sometimes at work I forget to plug it in before booting up, then if I plug it in, the balloon tip sound appears but the drive is not visible in Windows Explorer, the only way I can get it to appear is to reboot and plug it in when XP is going through the boot up process. Many times when I forget I have logged onto the server as well as logging on to work email account, all with passwords.

When I forget to plug it in at the beginning of the day, I have to log off everything and reboot, a real PITA. Does anybody have a suggestion how I can correct this on the work computer so whenever I plug it in XP will recognize it. I do have administrator privileges on the work computer. Or Log in to Reply.

Your instructions sound simple enough, no problem delving into the registry for me. I will give it a try on Monday when I return to work. I appreciate the time you spent in making your post. In all honesty though I don't think it will work simply due to the fact the issue appeared on two computers I tried it on at the workplace. But, I may be wrong since the administrator probably used the same programmed disk to install XP on all the identical Hewlett Packard computers.

I'll post my results using your suggestion on Monday evening, if it works others can benefit from your suggestion. Imani Well I did the registry fixes you outlined and the issue still exists. I even deleted all the entries in the prefetch folder with no change. Windows Explorer just refuses to recognize it without a reboot. Same thing, plug it in and ballon tip for safely remove hardware appears. In Device Manager it appears under Disk Drives as 'SanDisk Cruzer Micro USB Device', and under 'Universal Serial Bus controllers' as USB Mass Storage Device.
