Hey I'm having the exact same problem, the audio icon has a red circle with a white x in it and says 'no audio input device is installed' i have a dell laptop and i had no problems with the aduio till a few days ago when my compter had some problems and i reloaded windows (vista home premium 32bit)and ever since the aduio hasn't worked. I tried that link and installed the sigmatel driver and it didn't help?

When I went to Device Manager, it showed that the latest drivers had been installed and that the audio was working fine. However, if I went to the speaker icon on the bottom right there was a x on the speaker indicating it was not working.

By right-clicking and choosing playback devices (same as going to Control Panel - Sounds), it said that no audio devices were installed. So Device Manager says all is well and the rest of Windows says no audio device is installed. First attempts at fixing were the basic uninstall of the driver to have Windows reinstall. I did this and rebooted and no fix. Next attempt was to uninstall and delete the driver completely from my computer and then download the latest driver from Dell. I did this and rebooted and no fix.

Next attempt was running the Dell diagnostics CD. I booted from the CD and audio tested perfectly fine in the diagnostics environment. But when I loaded up Windows again, nothing. After much searching online, I found an article about Windows XP stating that the biggest conflict with the audio drivers is often the Modem drivers. I then uninstalled the Modem driver in Device Manager and deleted it from the system so Windows wouldn't reinstall it. I then uninstalled and deleted the 'SigmaTel HD Audio' drivers and then downloaded the latest drivers again from Dell. This time it worked!

Even before the recommended reboot the audio started working again. I no longer have the ability to use the modem (or maybe it would work if I troubleshot a little further but since it has been years since I used a modem I didn't bother trying). So essentially, if you are troubleshooting Audio issues and all basic troubleshooting fails, try removing the Modem drivers and see if that helps! Of course, make sure you don't need the modem or if you do, troubleshoot reinstalling that while not affecting the audio. Thanks, tbarron7!

I just upgraded from Vista Home Basic to Home Premium. I followed your path by uninstalling the drivers. I now recall that after I finished the Vista 'Upgrade Anytime' that it automatically re-installed the modem driver and this is when my audio stopped working.

After taking your advice, what was different for me was that even though I selected the 'remove files' when uninstalling the drivers for my modem and audio, it re-installed them anyway after I rebooted. In any case, things appear back to normal now. Thanks again for doing the leg-work on this fix! I did everything you said, tbarron. Not a damned thing worked. i tried uninstalling the drivers for my modem and my audio system and i deleted the drivers.

Still, the system kept reinstalling them upon restart. I tried d/l the dell drivers and i could not even install them.

I kept getting an error that said something was missing and i had to restart. I've had my dell for about a year now, and it's an inspiron 6400. I've searched online, downloaded all kinds of audio drivers that were vista compatible, and still nothing. Plleeeasseee help!! Till I downloaded the 50 updates off the internet. Even after that the sound wouldn't work. So, I skipped straight to the last step of getting rid of both the sigma driver and the modem driver, and when I rebooted, the computer installed BOTH automatically. But it still fixed it.

I was haveing issues with my sound 'no audio output device is installed' so after reading a lot of solutions to the issue i tried the one you suggested and bammm it worked this is how I did it step by step:first go to start then ctrl panel then click uninstall a program then look for the sound device and uninstall it then exit any application and then 1.
